Fezeka goes to the World Cup

RecycleReward

JUNE 21, 2010 — Building on the success of the Fezeka School Choir performing at the World Cup, 90 Fezeka students attended the Portugal-South Korea game at Cape Town's Green Point Stadium.

The tickets were a reward for participating in a recycling project sponsored by Coca Cola, FIFA and the Department of Education, and coordinated by EwB volunteer Laura Egdorf.

Fezeka earned third place in the Western Cape, recycling over 42,500 plastic bottles and cans in a month. Grade 11 student Lwando Magwaca turned in the most with 2,082.

"It was amazing how much we collected and it was fun to see it result in something," said Egdorf. "The kids were really very excited, they were playing their vuvuzelas and singing and dancing on the bus ride."

The school was given 100 tickets for the project. The top 85 recycling students were joined by five chosen from a creative competition, as well as teachers and administrators.

Earlier in the day, the Fezeka School Choir, led by choir master Phumi Tsewu, took the stage at the FIFA Fan Fest and the national singing champions wowed the crowd in downtown Cape Town.

Congratulations to Fezeka and Laura!
