Voices of EwB: Bonga Kunene

My name is Bonga Kunene. I have been a tutor for Education without Borders (EwB) for the past four years. The year of 2020 was one of the most difficult years for me due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of people lost their jobs, lost the power to provide and lost family members. I was one of those who lost a family member. In May 2020, I lost my younger sister. I didn't know what to do because we didn't have anything at home – like nothing. EwB showed up out of nowhere and they assisted me. I was able to travel home thousands of kilometres away to be with my family. We had several costs to cover in order for my sister's soul to rest in peace. I will always be grateful and thankful to EwB.

As we all know, COVID-19 caused everything to shut down, no businesses were allowed to operate and a lot of them didn't even pay their workers during the pandemic. I am so fortunate and blessed to work for a caring organisation. They took the little that they have and they kept on supporting me and the other tutors. Personally I didn't have anything and the lockdown forced us to stay indoors. If it weren’t for EwB, I wouldn’t have had anything to eat at all.

Thanks to the EwB stipend, I managed to sleep with something in my stomach everyday.

I would like to thank all EwB sponsors for helping me and my family during the darkest days and say please keep up the support and change more lives.
